Brown Mussels Support Livelihoods Along Thiruvananthapuram Coast
Along the rocky coast of Thiruvananthapuram, brown mussel harvesting sustains local fisherfolk. Each morning, colorful catamarans bring mussels to Vizhinjam fishing harbour, where catches are auctioned, sometimes fetching ₹15,000 per lot. Harvesting peaks from September to February, with fishers diving underwater or from rocks to collect mussels using metal knives. Veteran diver Babu Sukumaran, 61, has been harvesting since age 15 despite injuries.
