In 1904, the Duke of Bedford sent six Himalayan tahr to New Zealand for hunting, with five surviving the journey. Released near Mount Cook in the Southern Alps, these goat-like animals from India and Nepal established a population that spread over 9,600 square kilometers. A 2017 study tracked their impact and population changes, noting fluctuations and a reduction from 50,000 to about 15,000 due to helicopter hunting since 1970.
