Blood-Tainted Ice Cubes and the Madras Famine of 1876-78
In colonial Madras, British elites enjoyed Scotch whisky chilled with ice imported from New England, stored at the Ice House in Triplicane. However, the ice trade involved harsh labor by Scheduled Caste workers who cut and handled the ice under brutal conditions. Tamil writer Jeyamohan's novel Vellai Yaanai highlights this exploitation amid the Great Madras Famine of 1876-78, which devastated the region.
