PoliticsBereaved Mothers Shape Bengal Politics from Left to Nandigram Bypoll
In Bengal, bereaved mothers have become powerful political symbols across ideological lines, from the Left’s food agitations to the Nandigram anti-land acquisition protests and bypolls. The BJP recently fielded Hasirani Rath, mother of Chandranath Rath, killed in May 2023, for the October 6 Nandigram bypoll. Earlier, TMC’s Firoza Bibi won the 2009 bypoll after her son was killed in police firing during the 2007 Nandigram protests. This figure remains central to Bengal’s political mobilization and elections.
