The 17th-century Gavi Gangadhareshwara temple near Bengaluru has been used for over 300 years to mark solstices and seasonal changes. Two large discs in its courtyard align to show solstice shadows. Originally marking the winter solstice on December 22, architectural changes shifted this to January 14, linking it to Makara Sankranti, which falls on January 15 this year.
