Khaki dye, famously used in military uniforms, was invented in 1851 by Johannes Haller, a master weaver at the Basel Mission's weaving establishment in Balmatta, Mangaluru. This historical fact is documented in Mangaluru Darshana, German mission archives, and a doctoral thesis on Basel Mission industries. Before khaki, people stained clothes with sludge or tea residue to achieve a similar color. The Basel Mission started cottage industries in Mangaluru in 1834 under British Madras Presidency.
