Frederick G. Banting and John J.R. Macleod received the 1923 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering insulin, a hormone that regulates blood glucose. Their research at the University of Toronto in the early 1920s led to insulin becoming a life-saving treatment for diabetes, a previously often fatal disease. The prize was shared equally between them.
