Atari's 1983 Game Dump Excavated in New Mexico in 2014

In 1983, Atari buried surplus video games in a New Mexico desert landfill. In 2014, over 1,300 of these games were excavated in Alamogordo, marking the first archaeological dig of video games, as studied by Andrew Reinhard in 2015. One game from the dig sold for more than $1,500. Atari's 1982 hit E.T. game, rushed in development and commercially unsuccessful, contributed to the surplus.
