Assam Faces Heat Stress Despite Not Meeting India's Heatwave Criteria

Assam experiences significant heat stress even though its temperatures often fall below India's conventional heatwave thresholds. Recent years have seen maximum temperatures above 37°C, with Guwahati reaching 40.1°C in May 2024 and breaking September records. The India Meteorological Department issued rare alerts as temperatures in cities like Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Tezpur, and Dhubri rose 4-8°C above normal, highlighting challenges in heatwave classification.
