SciencePhoto: HT WorldArizona Researcher Tests Dwarf Peas' CO2 Absorption in Biosphere 2
In October 2025, a University of Arizona researcher spent two weeks inside Biosphere 2's sealed habitat with 144 dwarf pea plants. The experiment measured whether the plants could absorb carbon dioxide from human breath and produce oxygen using sunlight and water. On Day 8, the plants were harvested to compare CO2 levels. This was the first bio-regenerative life support test with human participation in Biosphere 2 since 1994.
