American Chestnut Returns to Bronx Zoo After 120 Years
The American chestnut tree has returned to the Bronx Zoo after more than 120 years since blight was first recorded there. As part of a restoration effort, the zoo and New York Restoration Project planted 25 hybrid saplings. Once widespread across eastern North America, the species was nearly wiped out by a disease that killed almost 4 billion trees.
