ScienceAfrican Elephants Found to Self-Medicate Like Great Apes
Scientists have discovered that African elephants in Kenya self-medicate by traveling long distances to consume specific tree bark and leaves without foraging elsewhere. This behavior, known as zoopharmacognosy, involves animals using plants and other natural substances to treat infections, parasites, wounds, and gastrointestinal issues. Similar self-medicating behaviors have been observed in great apes, dolphins, and birds.
