SciencePhoto: HT World2026 Study Reveals Genetic History of Hong Kong Feral Cattle
A 2026 genome study sequenced 30 feral cattle from Hong Kong, revealing high genetic diversity despite their small population of about 1,000. The cattle, abandoned in the 1970s, have adapted to local environments and show ancient wild-bovine ancestry. Samples were collected from Sai Kung, Lantau Island, and parts of the New Territories, highlighting their unique evolution without human management.
