SciencePhoto: HT World2004 Tsunami Left India’s Trinket Island Cattle Feral, Only 150 Remain
Trinket Island in India's Nicobar archipelago lost its human population after the 2004 tsunami, leaving cattle abandoned. Originally introduced by Danish colonists in the 18th century, these cattle became feral after being left to survive alone. A 2020 study reported only about 150 descendants remain, making the herd vulnerable to extinction. The cattle were once semi-feral and valued mainly for meat by the Nicobarese.
