2,000-Year-Old Roman Bread Found in Oven After Vesuvius Eruption
A carbonised loaf of bread was discovered inside an oven in Herculaneum during excavations in 1930. The bread dates back nearly 2,000 years to the AD 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius. This find provides insight into ancient Roman food habits. The British Museum recreated the bread, and other loaves show how Romans portioned and stamped their bread for identification.
