SciencePhoto: HT World1961 Volcano Evacuates Tristan da Cunha; Cattle Thrive Months Later
In 1961, a volcanic eruption on Tristan da Cunha forced all 264 residents to evacuate the island. The eruption began in August, intensifying until October when a lava dome formed near the village of Edinburgh of the Seven Seas. Residents fled to Nightingale Island and were later rescued to England. Months after evacuation, scientists found 200 cattle thriving on the deserted island.
