SciencePhoto: HT World1859 Release of 13 Rabbits in Australia Led to Major Pest Problem
On Christmas Day 1859, Thomas Austin released 13 European rabbits on his Victoria estate in Australia for hunting. By 1866, hunters had shot over 14,000 rabbits there. The rabbits thrived with abundant food and no predators, spreading rapidly across Australia. Within 50 years, they colonized two-thirds of the continent, causing a significant ecological issue.
