17-Year-Old Develops Bacteria to Slow Arctic Ice Melt
Justin Bernstein, a 17-year-old student from Greenwich, Connecticut, developed genetically engineered bacteria to help slow Arctic ice melting. His project involves engineering Cryobacterium to produce reflective silica, which could reduce glaciers' solar energy absorption. Named a 2025 Davidson Fellow in science, he received a $50,000 scholarship for this innovative research.
