SciencePhoto: HT World12 Snowshoe Hares Released in 1959 Devastated Canadian Island Forests
In 1959, two fishermen transported 12 snowshoe hares from Grand Manan Island to Hay Island in the Bay of Fundy, hoping to create a trapping opportunity. The hares rapidly multiplied and spread to Kent Island, severely hindering tree growth. Research showed tree recruitment dropped on Kent Island but remained stable on hare-free Outer Wood Island. The hares were eradicated after nearly 50 years, with the last trapped in 2007.
