India Records Fourth Lowest Monsoon Rainfall in 25 Years Due to El Niño

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), India experienced 13% less rainfall than normal during the June-September monsoon season this year. The total rainfall recorded was 759.4 mm compared to the normal 868.6 mm. This is the fourth lowest monsoon rainfall since 2001. The IMD attributed the rainfall deficit mainly to the El Niño condition that emerged in June, which caused a 35.4% drop in rainfall that month, though July saw a 1% increase over normal.
