BusinessIndia Lowers Foodgrain Production Target for 2026-27 Due to El Niño
The Indian government has reduced the foodgrain production target for the 2026-27 crop year to 373.93 million tons, down by 2.63 million tons from the previous year's actual production of 376.56 million tons. This decision was made due to concerns over El Niño's impact, considering water availability and soil moisture. The target includes 196.21 million tons for Kharif and 177.72 million tons for Rabi seasons. Fertilizer supply is sufficient, with an estimated requirement of 380 lakh tons. The government is consulting states to adapt crop patterns amid adverse conditions.
